Belleville person charged with arson in Tweed fire

A 33-year-old from Belleville has been charged with arson relating to a fire in Tweed on Sunday.

A family managed to escape with their pets as fire-ravaged their two-story brick home on Sulphide Road Sunday afternoon. Fire Chief Derrick Little said the four residents managed to escape the blaze with their three dogs.

He said the blaze caused about $400,000 in damages.

GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help the family recover.

The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal was called in to probe the cause of the blaze.

Central Hastings OPP report they were called for a report of an assault and residential fire. They add the investigation led Belleville Police Service detaining a person in the city.

A 33-year-old from Belleville has been charged with arson, assault with a weapon, utter threats to cause death or bodily harm, and fail to comply with recognizance.

The person involved was scheduled to attend a bail hearing Monday at the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville. Police state the identity of the person cannot be released in order to protect the identity of the victims.
