East Gwillimbury is hiring paid on-call firefighters.

A paid on-call firefighter performs the same duties and training as full-time firefighters, serving on an on-call basis, allowing them to maintain flexible schedules and additional commitments, a Town of East Gwillimbury news release stated.

Paid on-call firefighters carry pagers that alert them when an emergency response has been dispatched and the fire department's assistance is required. The firefighters then commute using their vehicles to their designated station, gear up, and respond to the scene.

They are paid to respond to calls, attend training and conduct public education in the community.

"Becoming a paid on-call firefighter is a rewarding experience that allows people to be involved in their community, be part of a team, develop lifelong skills and experiences, uphold the three lines of defence (public education, fire safety standards, and emergency response), and of course, earn a supplemental income," the town stated.

Application requirements:

  • Must reside in East Gwillimbury.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a Grade 12/high school diploma.
  • Upon request by Fire and Emergency Services, a recent, clean criminal background check (Vulnerable Sector Search) and clean Driver's Abstract must be provided.
  • Availability to respond in a timely fashion, including weekends and holidays.
  • Applicants will be required to complete Ontario Fire Administration Inc. stages one, two, and swim test.

East Gwillimbury's fire service is comprised of paid on-call and full-time firefighters. To learn more or to apply before July 5, click here.
