A fire that broke out at a supportive housing building in Victoria was quickly doused, according to firefighters.

Alarms were triggered at the Camas Gardens building at 950 Humboldt St. just before 9 a.m. Saturday.

Victoria Fire Battalion Chief Tim Loewen says no one was injured in the fire, which was contained to a single unit.

However, smoke could be seen coming into the hallway of the building, and the structure’s sprinkler system was deployed, affecting about three floors of the 44-unit building.

Two units, including the one where the fire originated, were considered unsafe after the fire. Loewen says Pacific Housing, which operates the supportive housing building, is working on relocating the displaced tenants.

“A plan was established with Pacifica Housing to manage any displaced residents that were experiencing any hazards with their units,” he said.

The fire is believed to have started on a mattress in the building, though the investigation is still underway.
