Explosion at Pickering waste facility injures four people

Toronto Star

A truck explosion at a waste facility in Pickering left four workers with minor burns on Tuesday afternoon.

Durham Regional Police and Pickering Fire Department responded to the scene at a GFL Environmental Inc. site on 1070 Toy Avenue shortly after the explosion. Three of the injured workers were transported to local hospitals for treatment, according to police.

A representative from GFL Environmental Inc. said that no one was immediately available to comment on the fire at its Pickering facility, which handles liquid and special waste.

“People were actually pulled from their desks to go outside right away” when the explosion took place, they told the Star.

Pickering Fire confirmed they responded to a fire at the facility on Tuesday, but refused to disclose any further information about the incident.

“It’s all under investigation, so unfortunately details aren’t being released at this time,” said a spokesperson for the fire department.

The Ministry of Labour is investigating the incident, according to police.
