EMERGENCY VEHICLE TECHNICIAN (EVT) / FIREFIGHTER (PERMANENT, FULL TIME)
FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICES

The Human Resources Department is accepting applications for the Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) / Firefighter position. The EVT reports directly to the fire chief or designate, ensuring the fleet and equipment are operational-ready.  The responsibilities of the EVT include apparatus certifications, conducting apparatus and equipment maintenance and managing testing and documentation responsibilities per the legislative and regulatory standards set out in the Ontario Highway Traffic Act and any other applicable Provincial regulations, By-Laws, Policies, Guidelines and Procedures.  The EVT will maintain all apparatus and equipment in operational readiness. The secondary requirements for this position will include supporting fire department operations by backfilling firefighter 24-hour shifts as an operational firefighter and dispatcher.  The EVT / Firefighter will support fire prevention programs, delivering public safety education and communication, emergency preparation, and risk management.  This Monday-to-Friday schedule requires 42 hours per week with occasional 24-hour shifts.

Qualifications:

  • Valid Truck and Coach Technician (310-T) Certificate of Qualification (Ontario), required. 
  • Possess a valid Automotive Service Technician (310-S) Certificate of Qualification (Ontario), an asset.
  • Possession of valid EVT F1, F2, F3, F4 and F5 certifications would be an asset or must be willing to receive such certifications.
  • Advanced knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act (Ontario) Regulations 419/15, 601, and 611 and National Safety Code Standard 11B are required.
  • Minimum Grade 12 diploma or equivalent required. 
  • A minimum of five years of recent fire apparatus and heavy truck experience is required. 
  • Experience in fire pump inspection, testing and repairs, an asset.
  • Experience in the area of hydraulics mechanics, an asset. 
  • Ability to maintain accurate compliance records of fire department-related equipment. 
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and any other associated Acts, Regulations, applicable Legislation, and By-Laws that govern the safe operation of emergency vehicles and equipment. 
  • Capable of identifying problems, troubleshooting mechanical equipment, implementing solutions, and making good judgements and sound decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, undertake self-directed tasks when necessary, and work irregular shifts as part of a team as required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and customer service skills with the ability to always exercise tact and diplomacy.
  • Proficiency with various communication tools, devices, and related software, including the Microsoft Office suite and office equipment.
  • Applicants must be physically fit and may be required to complete a post-offer medical examination.
  • Familiarity with the geography of Prince Edward County and surrounding areas, including the local streets, is considered an asset.
  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter Certification or equivalency, required. 
  • NFPA 1002 is considered an asset or mandatory within the first year of hiring.
  • Valid First Aid, CPR, and Defib certificates; EMR considered an asset.
  • Valid Class "D" Driver's License with an air brake (Z) endorsement and a satisfactory Driver's Abstract, required. 
  • A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Background Check is required.
  • Must be able to attend the main Fire Administration Office within 15 minutes of initial call out.

The annual salary range for this position is $73,033.86 to $91,232.30 as per the current wage schedule of the IAFF Local 2745 Collective Agreement. Compensation also includes a competitive benefit package and membership in OMERS.
