One person is dead after a fire on the 12th floor of a downtown Hamilton apartment building.
Emergency crews were called to the multiple-alarm fire at 155 Market Street in Hamilton around 5 p.m. and saw flames coming from a 12th floor unit.
After hustling up to the 12th floor, firefighters entered the unit and "commenced an aggressive attack in extinguishing the fire," said deputy fire chief John Verbeek.
A victim was located during search and rescue operations, he said, and pronounced dead on the scene.
"There is one confirmed fatality as a result of this fire," tweeted the Hamilton Fire Department. "The Ontario Fire Marshal has been requested to attend."
There were no other injuries. Damage is estimated at $35,000.
The fire department also said residents were allowed back in the building Thursday night.
