Man dies in Wainfleet garage fire

A Wainfleet man has died after a fire in an attached two-car garage Thursday morning on Regional Road 27.

"We were called at 9:30 a.m. for the report of a garage fire with an occupant inside," said Wainfleet Fire and Emergency Services Chief Morgan Alcock.

"I was first on scene and there were flames coming from the garage," he said from the scene at about 12:30 p.m.

He said the garage was attached to the home, at 61390 Regional Rd. 27 across from Hewitt Road, and that a woman inside and a dog were safely evacuated.

When Wainfleet volunteer firefighters arrived, the chief said, they made a rapid attack on the fire but were unable to get to the man inside the garage.

Firefighters conducted an exterior attack to knock down the flames and then forced their way inside by removing a garage door.

Alcock said once they had access to the man they were able to confirm with Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics that they would not be performing a rescue.

"The coroner was called in. The Ontario Fire Marshal's office will be attending later today," he said.

The fire marshal is called in when there is a death in a fire.

Alcock said there were 20 Wainfleet volunteer firefighters on scene with three engines, a rescue truck and one tanker, and two additional tankers were called in as mutual aid from Pelham Fire Department.

Two water ponds were set up in front of the home as water was shuttled from the township to the scene.

Regional Road 27 was shut down by Niagara Regional Police between Tunnacliffe and just west of Hewitt Road.
