Oakville Fire Department (OFD) says a barbecue on the balcony of six-storey building was responsible for a Tuesday evening fire in Bronte.
The fire occurred at 2311 Ontario Street at multiple unit residential building. Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Coburn says the OFD received a call just after 8 p.m on July14.
According to Coburn, OFD arrived on the scene (with five vehicles and one command officer present) and saw smoke and visible flames coming from the one of the balconies on the fourth floor.
"The first arriving crew was able to apply water to the 4th floor with a ‘quick hit’ from the exterior before entering the building," Coburn said in an email to Oakville News.
Fire crews then went up to the fourth floor, Coburn says. Crews saw that smoke and fire from the balcony entered inside the unit. Fire crews were able to limit the fire spread and damage inside due to "an aggressive attack."
Once the fire was brought under control, crews competed a primary search at approximately 8:12 p.m.
Due to the heat advisory (that is currently still in effect), Coburn says that OFD crews provided cooling support to residents who were out of the units during the fire.
Residents were able to return back to the units after crews removed the smoke from the building.
"The cause was reported to be a BBQ on the balcony, and the dollar loss was estimated at $20,000," Coburn wrote.
The Office of the Fire Marshal was not notified about the incident.
No injuries occurred to the firefighters or residents, Coburn reports.
Halton Police and Halton Paramedics on currently on scene with OFD.
In a post on social media, Oakville Mayor Rob Burton offered his thanks to the OFD Fire Chief and firefighters who were involved with putting out the fire.
"Your speed, your professionalism, and your care for our residents in tough conditions are exactly why this community sleeps a little easier," the mayor wrote. "We are proud of you."
