Toronto police are investigating an early morning fire at a midtown restaurant on Wednesday as suspected arson.

Officers responded to calls for an explosion and fire at a restaurant near Eglinton Avenue W. and Bathurst Street around 2: 43 a.m. Wednesday, said Toronto police on social media.

Fire crews arrived on scene to find smoke coming out of the back of the building, said Toronto Fire acting district chief John Pagnotta at a news conference later Wednesday morning.

He said crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire in the basement of the restaurant, where the blaze is believed to have started. Pagnotta noted that Toronto Fire has not yet been able to confirm if there was an explosion before the fire.

Fire crews are still at the scene to monitor the situation and to help police investigate the incident, he said.

Police said two adjacent buildings also sustained some damage from the incident.

They said no injuries have been reported at this time. While four people were assessed at the scene, Toronto paramedics said no one needed transportation to hospital.

Pagnotta said eight residents living in the building were displaced by the fire, but have places to stay until they're allowed back inside.

As investigators look into the case of suspected arson, police urge anyone with information to reach out.
