A fire on the Lincoln Road, just outside of Fredericton, heavily damaged a multi-unit building leaving four people without a home, according to the Oromocto Fire Department.
Firefighters got a call at about 6:30 p.m. on Saturday that there was a fire on the Airport Inn property.
The department’s Assistant Deputy Chief Jerry Poirier said no one was injured as a result of the fire and the fire was under control by almost 8 p.m.
He said the fire investigation is complete and the cause of the fire is undetermined.
“From our perspective, there is nothing malicious, no criminal intent that we were able to find,” said Poirier.
He said the fire “could have been a lot worse.”
The single-storey building that was damaged by the fire had an attached garage that was completely burnt down. The garage was just feet away from an eight-unit building that was fully rented out.
A resident’s pickup truck was also damaged by the fire.
Yingchun Su and her husband have owned the two buildings for over 20 years and are glad everyone was safe last night.
“The only thing is nobody gets injured. Nobody gets hurt. You know, everybody is awake when it happens, so everybody get out,” said Su.
She said a friend called her last night to tell her a building on the property was on fire.
“I said ‘wow, what? My God, what what happened?’ And then I just drop everything and drive here and see all the fire trucks.”
Su is not sure what’s next for the property as she works with her insurance company.
She said today she’s working on repairing the exterior stairs and siding that were damaged on the eight-unit building.
The third building on the property, the Airport Inn, wasn’t affected by the fire.
Su said she sold the building last summer which happened after an inspection by the Department of Justice and Public Safety resulted in the power and water being disconnected.
