Firefighters extinguish vehicle engulfed in flames on Hwy. 417 in Ottawa

CTV News

Ottawa firefighters were called after a vehicle overheated and became engulfed in flames on Highway 417 in Ottawa Saturday evening.

The fire began at approximately 6:30 p.m. in the westbound lanes near the Vanier Parkway and Riverside Drive.

Firefighters and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were sent to the area to assist. The road was brought down to one lane as firefighters battled the smoke and flames, causing significant traffic disruptions in the area.

No injuries were reported.

OPP say in a post on X that it had a “busy day” responding to vehicles that had overheated or broken down due to extreme heat in the city this weekend.

Temperatures are expected to hit the mid-30s in the daytime and bring little relief in the evening hours.

“It’s always a good idea on hot days to check the fluids in your vehicle before driving so you can hopefully avoid being stranded! Make sure to have emergency supplies such as extra water to stay hydrated,” OPP say.

All lanes of the highway had reopened by approximately 7:15 p.m.
