One dead after motel fire in Cambridge

One man is dead and another was briefly in hospital following a motel fire in Cambridge.

It happened around 9:45 a.m. on Sunday when crews with the Cambridge Fire Department responded to reports of a blaze in a unit on the second floor of the Super 8 Motel on Hespeler Road.

According to officials, firefighters from four stations were able to quickly control the fire. Two people were rescued from the affected unit.

Both individuals were taken to hospital, but one later passed away as a result of injuries.

Waterloo Regional Police have since identified the deceased as a 53-year-old man.

The other victim, identified only as an adult woman, was treated for her injuries and discharged.

“On behalf of Cambridge Fire, I extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased during this very difficult time,” reads a statement from Brad Churchill, deputy fire chief with the Cambridge Fire Department.

Fire officials said the fire was contained to the unit in which it originated, and is not considered to be suspicious.

Emergency crews including Cambridge Fire Department investigators, Waterloo Regional Police and investigators from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office attended the scene on Sunday evening, to determine the circumstances of the fire.
