A Bell Boulevard retail building was evacuated Thursday morning after a fire broke out in a compactor.

Belleville firefighters responded to the Value Village location at 10:27 a.m.

When they arrived, material inside a compactor was burning prompting a plume of smoke at the scene.

“Firefighters were able to quickly isolate the fire to the compactor and removed any smoke that made it into the store. The entire plaza was evacuated for precaution while the smoke was cleared,” said Deputy Fire Chief Mark Shannon.

Around 11:15 a.m., Shannon said firefighters were still on scene.

There were no injuries and damage was limited to garbage burning in the compactor.

No damage estimate was available at press time.
