The main fire is out as firefighters now work through hot spots that remain.

Around 5:30 a.m., emergency crews responded to just south of Trenton Wesleyan Church, between Highway 33 and Old Highway 2 where a multi-unit townhouse complex under construction was on fire.

Multiple units were called in, along with OPP, Belleville fire, hydro and gas crews.

Quinte West Fire Chief John Whelan says the fire was still spreading rapidly in the early afternoon with Prince Edward County Firefighters joining the battle.

A crash truck was also called in from 8 Wing Trenton.

A portion of 2nd Dug Hill Road remains closed but Whelan tells Quinte News that the road should be open soon.

The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in due to the massive damage estimate, which will be in the seven figures.

The scope of the damage is not known at this time.

Whelan says no one was in the building at the time of the fire.
