Reporting to the Chief Fire Prevention Officer, the Fire Prevention Officer will be responsible for but not limited to carrying out routine fire prevention inspections; completing reports; making recommendations to improve fire safety; enforcing Municipal Bylaws, Federal and Provincial Acts, and other relevant Acts and Legislation in respect to Fire Prevention, Investigation and Public Education. The Fire Prevention Officer will also conduct investigations of fire scenes to determine the cause and origin of the fire; act as an assistant to the Fire Marshal as per Provincial Regulations; co-operate with other civic and provincial officials in matters pertaining to fire safety; participate in Fire Prevention education activities; and instruct the public in the hazards and prevention of Fire.
Qualifications
- Completed secondary school and/or have the equivalency recognized by the Ministry of Education, supplemented with relevant education courses
- Certified in NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Level I
- Must have a valid Ontario Driver's License in good standing during the course of employment
- Experience involving fire behaviour; cause determination; and fire suppression is required
- Knowledge of building construction, fire alarm systems and devices; building codes; fire codes; regulating bylaws; sprinkler, standpipe and water supply systems; and the knowledge of of the general properties of flammable and combustible liquids
- The successful candidate must have the ability to read and interpret construction plans
- The ability to understand, communicate, respond to, read and write the English language is also required
- The successful applicant will be familiar with Brantford and the surrounding area, committed to the education of citizens in fire and life safety, able to function in close proximity to others harmoniously, and work in extreme environmental situations which may cause mental and physical stress
- Commitment to on-going job related training and personal development on and off duty when required and to life long learning is essential
- Demonstrated conflict resolution skills are also required
- Must provide a current, clear Vulnerable Sector Check from an accredited Police Service
One or more of the following would be considered an asset:
- Certified NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Level II
- Certified NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator
- Certified NFPA 1035 Level I
