Position Summary

As an integral part of the Fire Prevention Division, the Educator is responsible for the review and revision of existing education and safety programs as well as developing and implementing new ones to address the ongoing educational needs of our community. The Educator is responsible for developing and delivering programs based on identified risks and target audiences, preparing and delivering presentations, monitoring and reviewing feedback from those presentations, working with educators from other fields, and maintaining accurate records and data related to the educational programs delivered. The Fire and Life Safety Educator also provides fire and life safety training and support to other fire department divisions and members of businesses, community groups, health/long-term care facilities, and persons of all ages from pre-school children to older adults.

Major Job Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of the Fire and Life Safety Educator are to:

• Develop, deliver and evaluate public education programs
• Identifies the requirements to develop and deliver fire and life safety programs
• Perform Public Relations
• Communicate with the public
• Provide Technical Support and Training to Fire Department Personnel
• Perform Administrative Duties
• Participate in Professional Development and Training

Education & Experience

Minimum Qualifications

  Education

• Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma

Experience

• Demonstrated experience in the development and evaluation of programs, preparation of presentations and lesson plans, and other written and audio-visual materials to support program delivery for a wide range of audiences
• At least (5) five years of experience as a public educator delivering public fire safety education

Certifications and Designations

• NFPA 1035 – Standard on Fire and Life and Safety Educator, Public Information Officer, Youth Firesetter Intervention Specialist and Youth Firesetter Program Manager Professional; Fire Life Safety Educator I, Fire and Life Safety Educator II
• Standard First Aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Level C and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Certifications

Preferred Qualifications

Education

• A post-secondary degree or diploma in Fire and Life Safety Education, Teaching, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Writing, or related discipline

Certifications and Designations

• NFPA 1041 - Standard for Fire and Emergency Services Instructor Professional Qualifications; Fire and Emergency Services Instructor I
• NFPA 1031 - Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner; Fire Inspector I

Additional Skills

• Excellent written and verbal communication/presentation skills
• Excellent organizational skills (e.g., tracking and planning) and ability to work effectively in a team-based environment as well as independently
• Strong interpersonal, presentation and writing skills. Able to develop and maintain records, and to write accurate, concise reports to provide information and conclusions that can be understood and acted upon
• Able to work independently with minimal supervision. Initiates research and analysis to maintain and improve delivery of mechanical servicing
• Able and willing to contribute to maintaining a respectful, safe and supportive work environment that embraces diversity, along with treating everyone with courtesy, dignity and fairness
• Able to establish and utilize relationships and networks across a broad range of groups and people to maximize departmental opportunities and objectives
• Demonstrates excellent, professional customer-service skills and focus, delivering service with integrity and respect
• Computer literate and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), social media apps (Facebook, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram), and meeting apps such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams or similar
• Multilingual skills preferred, including sign language
• Thorough understanding of NFPA 1300 - Standard on Community Risk Assessment and Community Risk Reduction Plan Development
• Familiarity with FDM records management computer software
