The Town of Amherstburg Fire Department is a progressive, highly trained composite department of 60 volunteer firefighters and 6 full-time personnel operating out of three fire stations to provide fire suppression, rescue, fire inspection/code enforcement, public education, and emergency management planning services. Job Summary
The Fire Chief has full charge and responsibility for the conduct and general operations of the Fire department including, firefighting, fire prevention, hazardous material incidents, auto extrication incidents, rescue, all life and property saving functions in which the department may be involved as well as purchasing, maintenance and budgeting. The Fire Chief is responsible for continuous development and improvement of all department services and exercises a high degree of independent action, judgment and initiative on administrative, operational and technical matters, issue resolution and decision making. As part of the role, the Fire Chief, acting in the capacity of the Emergency Management Coordinator is responsible for coordinating, reporting to and advising the Mayor and members of Council on all aspects of the Municipality’s Emergency Response Plan and Programs.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education:
- Graduate of Ontario Fire College or equivalent, required;
- University degree in a related field;
- Provincial Certification as a NFPA Fire Officer III minimum requirement and;
- CEMC certification is required within one year of appointment.
Experience:
- 20-years’ experience in fire service, required;
- Minimum 7-years’ experience in a Chief Officer role, required;
- Experience conducting fire inspections with associated reporting and deficiency follow-up;
- Experience preparing reports and correspondence & policy direction;
- Experience with Procurement procedures and Budget Development;
- Must be able to maintain an effective working relationship between and with permanent and volunteer firefighters; and
- Must be able to motivate and maintain active volunteer fire fighting force.
Knowledge:
- Working knowledge of applicable Occupational Health and Safety legislation, Ontario Fire Code, Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Ontario Building Code, National Fire Prevention Association, existing standards, related and existing municipal by-laws, legislation and standards;
- Thorough knowledge of the characteristics of fire, fire spread, building material and construction practices with working knowledge of alarm systems, suppression devices, emergency lighting, internal communications equipment and blueprints; and
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Auxilium.

Salary
The salary range for this full time, non-union position is $133,223 to $166,529
