Gordon Bentley

GORDON ELMER BENTLEY

1930-2023

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Gordon Bentley peacefully at home on July 28, 2023, at the age of 93. Gordon was the beloved husband of Jane Bentley for almost 72 years and was lovingly cared for by his daughter Gordi Ann. He was predeceased by his son Chrys. Gordon was a dear father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and we will miss him immensely. Gordon joined the Streetsville Fire Department when he was 18, eventually becoming the Deputy Chief of the organization in 1959. Upon the town's amalgamation into the City of Mississauga in 1974, he joined the Mississauga Fire Department. Gordon was the Chief of the Mississauga Fire Department between 1979-1992, including during the famous Mississauga Train Derailment. He was a long-standing Director of the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs including its presidency during 1990/1991. He served as the Canadian director of the International Association of Fire Chiefs for many years and was also active in the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs. In addition to firefighting, Gordon had a long career in the trades, holding multiple licenses in electrical, plumbing, gas fitting, and HVAC. He also ran several small businesses including Bentley Hardware in Streetsville. He was active in the community (Bread & Honey Festival founder) and in his church and will be sadly missed. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to Streetsville United Church in his honour.
