Cavan Monaghan Township firefighters battle a barn fire on Larmer Line, southwest of Peterborough, on Friday, Jan. 3, 2020. - CLIFFORD SKARSTEDT , Examiner

A workshop fire Friday afternoon closed a section of County Road 10 southwest of Peterborough to traffic.

Thick black smoke poured into the sky after the workshop went up in flames at 1097 County Road 10, just south of Larmer Line and north of Millbrook, at 1:50 p.m.

Cavan Monaghan Township firefighters put out the fire.

A man was working on a vehicle in a workshop at his home when it caught fire and spread to the building, Cavan Monaghan Fire Chief Bill Balfour told The Examiner. "When fire crews arrived, the structure was fully involved. They were able to bring the fire under control," Balfour said.

The man escaped from the blaze unharmed.

The shop was destroyed.

The burned-out shell of a red MG sports car was in the entranceway to the metal-clad workshop as firefighters continued to douse the flames.

Peterborough County-City paramedics were on hand to monitor the health of the firefighters.

No firefighters were hurt.

Peterborough police provided traffic control during the road closure.

There was no immediate word on the amount of damage or the cause of the fire.
