Longbow fire chief leads Firecon

Longbow Lake fire chief Warren Brinkman has been leading volunteer firefighters through a training weekend. Firecon brings together crews from across the northwest in Thunder Bay, including those from Indigenous communities.

"The invite for this event goes out across northwest Ontario. So, yes, we do have First Nations communities involved, and that's a critical and key component to this," Brinkman said.

The training responds to new requirements put in place by the province in the spring, in order to ensure first responders and firefighters in Ontario meet certification. Brinkman said it was rewarding to watch one of Longbow Lake's new members join in the learning.

"Just to watch her work and watch her take the information and knowledge in from a very basic, fresh understanding," he said.

Brinkman also served as the fire chief for the City of Kenora for many years.
