Paul Gott from the Ripcordz loves to perform in small venues like the Distraction.
Firefighters and police shutdown their concert on Friday before they had a chance to perform.
“The show started off great. The Distraction is a great little club, a basement space where they put on shows mostly for local bands," said Gott, a singer and guitarist with the Ripcordz.
"We were there and evidently somebody had phoned in a complaint. That's what the cops told me when I asked.”
Here's what the fire department said when asked about the shutdown.
"Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responded to a fire safety complaint at 72 East Street on Friday, July 25," said Aaron Gravelle, public education officer with Sault Fire Services.
"During the inspection of the property, it was noted that the building was not approved for use as a concert venue. Concert venues require additional fire and life safety measures in place to help mitigate the more significant fire safety risks they present.
"To ensure the safety of occupants and staff, the fire service ensured all occupants were removed from the building with the assistance from the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service," Gravelle said.
"Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services is dedicated to working with the building owner to ensure future building compliance. The City of Sault Ste. Marie Building Division has been notified and they will be working with the owner as well."
