1 person dead and another injured in Dundas house fire

One person is dead and another injured after an early morning fire in Dundas.

Fire crews from across the city were called to a single-storey home on Greening Court and found "heavy flames and smoke going through the roof," according to Hamilton fire chief Dave Cunliffe.

Firefighters were told there may be someone inside, and immediately began searching.

"As they were doing the search and rescue they came across a person," said Cunliffe. "That person was removed and handed over to the Hamilton Paramedic Service. Unfortunately that person has succumbed to their injuries."

Another person was found injured and on the front lawn, according to the chief, who added that person was taken to hospital, but their condition is unknown.

A dog was also rescued from the basement of the burning home.

'Stubborn fire'
The chief said emergency officials are still working to identify what caused the fire.

The Ontario Fire Marshal's office has been notified.

Cunliffe said he expects firefighters to stay on scene for much of the day.

"This is a pretty stubborn fire, we still have some hotspots," he said early Monday morning.
