25 Years Ago: Fire department put on best fireworks

The Cochrane Times-Post

Loud cheers and applause surrounded the lake on Saturday night as the last hissing spark of the awesome fireworks display ended.

The fireworks lived up to the hype as the burst, dazzled and enchanted the people on the beach, in their homes and on the streets. Each stand-out burst getting ovations around the lake.

Previously, the announcer down at Commando had been pumping up the crowd starting with a 45-minute countdown until “the best fireworks show north of Toronto” would happen.

The fireworks lasted a longer than usual 27 minutes and contained the best fireworks this town has seen.

This was thanks to the hard work and dedication from the Cochrane Fire Department which was able to raise approximately $23,000 for the fireworks. A normal budget for fireworks has usually floated around the $5,000 range.

The day was also filled with numerous activities.

The Victim and Child Abuse Prevention Committee (VCAPC) put on some kids’ activities at Commando Senior Public School. These activities included tug-of-war, bean bag toss, fish-for-a-prize among others.

The 4×4 pick-up truck races were enthralling the crowd, whetting their appetite for the tractor trailers on Sunday.

It was definitely a Canada Day to remember.
