Residents temporarily displaced following cooking fire at Aurora home

Residents have been temporarily displaced from their Aurora home following a cooking fire Saturday afternoon.

Central York Fire Services (CYFS) crews responded to a reported stove top fire June 21 at about 2:30 p.m., finding flames visible from the rangehood vent on arriving at the house on Chouinard Way. The fire, which extended from the stove top to the upper cabinets was quickly extinguished, an incident report states.

Damage was limited to the kitchen, and while all residents exited safely, they had had to find alternative accommodations temporarily, the report said.

CYFS responded with four trucks, 16 firefighters and a chief officer, working in collaboration with York Regional Police, York Region Paramedic Services and local utility services.

Cooking is the No. 1 cause of fires in Ontario, causing a third of fire related injuries. In the event of an emergency, working smoke alarms and a home escape plan can save lives, CYFS says.
