Heavy black smoke could be seen from kilometres away last night as firefighters battled a major fire at Moffatt Scrap Iron and Metal.

Halton police and OPP were on scene to assist a full-court press of fire crews from Milton, Halton Hills, Burlington, Hamilton and Puslinch at the Guelph Line facility, just north of Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Milton Fire Department Deputy Chief Matt Townsend said there were no injuries related to the fire, which involved several scrap vehicles and a large pile of scrap metal.

The cause remains undetermined at this time. Due to the nature of the business, Townsend expects the damage estimate to be minimal.

The blaze began around 8 p.m. and took several hours to extinguish.

A sizable stretch of Guelph Line was closed for hours, causing significant traffic delays along Hwy. 401.
