One person died as a result of a house fire at 518 Downie Street on May 18, according to the Stratford Fire Department.

Fire Chief Neil Anderson confirmed the death, stating that an adult woman’s body was found unconscious on the second floor of the residence and transported to Stratford General Hospital where she later died.

Anderson said SFD was called to the home at 11 p.m. on Sunday night, arriving on scene to a fire that was limited to a second-floor bedroom in the structure. Due to the fatality, Anderson said the Ontario Fire Marshal’s (OFM) office was contacted and they reported to the scene the next day. Firefighters remained on scene to make sure the fire didn’t restart, while Stratford Police provided security to maintain integrity of the scene and evidence.

No official report has been received from the OFM yet, but Anderson confirmed that the fire has been deemed not suspicious. No other injuries or people within the dwelling were reported.
