A Brantford man is facing a second-degree murder charge following a fatal fire at a townhouse complex.
Emergency responders were called to the home on Buchanan Crescent on Monday around 7:45 a.m. A neighbour described smoke billowing from a window and firefighters pulling a body out of the home wrapped in a blanket.
“A 49-year-old woman, who resided within the home, was transported to hospital where she was pronounced deceased,” said Const. Alex Guerra. “Three other adults, including the accused, were present in the home at the time of the fire and were transported to hospital for treatment.”
On Tuesday, police charged a 40-year-old man with second-degree murder. They have not release his name.
Police also said they could not comment on the relationship between the victim and the accused.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s (OFM) office was called in to investigate the fire on Monday, but Sean Driscoll, a spokesperson for the OFM, said they paused their investigation while they waited for the post-mortem to be completed.
No details have been shared about the other people taken to the hospital.
