Fire and Life Safety Inspector - DCC/CDC Facility Maintenance & Support Services (Real Property Operations Unit)

Structure: Full-Time Position, On-Site, Travel throughout G.T.A. and Southern Ontario Region

The Fire and Life Safety Inspector is responsible for inspecting all Fire Suppression and detection systems, within Defense Construction Canada (DCC) facilities ensuring they are operational and meet all Federal regulations, NFPA standards, ULC S536 – Inspection and Testing of Fire Alarm Systems Canadian Standards Association, CSA-C282 – Emergency Power Supply for Buildings, and Fire Marshal Directives – FMD 4004, FMD 4006. Provide education to facilities team and ensure compliance with fire and life safety codes. Ensuring that all Preventive Maintenance and Corrective Maintenance on the fire suppression and detection systems is completed and tested as per the NFPA guidelines. Reporting directly into the Fire and Life Safety Manager, and not limited to the following duties:

• Acts as an Assistant to the Fire and Life Safety Supervisor, under the provisions of the National Fire and Protection Act (NFPA).
• Conduct Fire Prevention (Fire Extinguisher, Fire Suppression and Detection Systems) inspections within DCC facilities by recording, documenting, providing recommendations to facility teams/clients, and enforce compliance with applicable fire regulations.
• Perform necessary service, repair, installation, refilling of Fire Extinguishers, Fire Suppression and Detection Systems.
• Perform on-site emergency troubleshooting and repairs as needed.
• Ensure enforcement of Federal fire prevention by-laws, the Federal Building Codes, the National Fire Code (where applicable) and other applicable codes and standards.
• Co-ordinate the inspections of premises that require a license from the federal government in order to ensure fire safety.
• Responsible for the examination activities for building permit applications, inspections of premises, enforcing municipal fire prevention by-laws, the Federal Building Codes, the National Fire Code (where applicable), and other applicable codes and standards, public education and fire investigation activities.
• Responsible for providing timely response to enquiries from the Fire and Life Safety Supervisor.
• Maintain a records on file and all required reports.
• Coordinate presentations, training, etc., on fire prevention to operational personnel, maintenance team, and sub-contractors. Ensure that all education programs meet the needs of the legislative requirements of the NFPA and the circumstances of the community.
• Perform related work such as discussing fire safety problems with the tenants, building inspectors, etc., and speak on fire safety and fire prevention topics when required.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

• Post-secondary graduation from Building Construction, Engineering, Fire Protection Technology or a similar program years progressive experience in Fire Prevention or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Registered CFAA
• NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector
• NFPA 1035 Fire and Life Safety Educator
• Graduate of the Fire Protection Technology Diploma course and / or the Fire Prevention Officer Diploma course at the Ontario Fire College or equivalent.
• Strong written and interpersonal skills required, including the ability to establish effective working relationships and provide quality customer service.
• Must possess a valid G driver’s license recognized by the Province of Ontario.

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• 2–3 years of Fire and Life Safety inspection or Building Inspection or Property Maintenance Inspection experience in the construction/facilities management & operations industry.

• Able to commute regularly to the GTA, and travel throughout Ontario (as needed).
• Security clearance requirements: must be able to get reliability and secret clearance.
