TRUCK OR TREAT: Clarington firefighters continue Halloween tradition

Clarington firefighters joined in the Halloween fun with their annual trick or treat tradition.

Several Clarington residents were pleasantly surprised to see fire trucks touring through their neighbourhoods with spooky music and candy rather than sirens, with many sharing their sightings on social media throughout Halloween night.

“It’s a huge hit every year,” said Deputy Fire Chief Randy Cowan, of the tradition, which is a partnership between fire administration and the Clarington Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 3139.

“We all pitch in and buy candy for the trucks and then go around and stop and hand out that candy, unless a call comes in of course,” said Cowan, noting the event is a favourite of both residents and firefighters every year.

“Most of our guys have kids of their own so when they can’t be home with their kids this is a way for them to still participate in Halloween,” Cowan continued. “We just hand out candy and let them see the truck and it’s always a big hit, there’s kids all over the truck wherever we stop.”

Cowan said the department plans to continue the tradition next year.
