The Township of South Glengarry and South Glengarry Fire Services are looking for a dynamic individual to fill the role of Deputy Fire Chief and Training officer.

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with Department operations as well as the successful design and implementation of a training program that meets the needs of our community and legislative requirements.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND SKILL/KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

Position Purpose:

Reporting to the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief is responsible to assist with the daily operations of the Fire Department. The predominant role of the position is the organization, delivering, evaluation and monitoring of training programs for volunteer and recruit firefighters as well as other municipal employees.

Ideally, this individual will be a flexible, collaborative, pro-active, multi-tasker who is comfortable and confident in an environment of changing priorities, someone who maintains a professional acumen and understands the need for integrity and confidentiality.  The ideal candidate must have a highly positive and professional demeanor and be a self-starting, problem solving and service-oriented individual with strong attention to detail and a drive for teamwork.  Strong computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite specifically PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Outlook also a requirement. Sound presentation skills for addressing various groups such as Council, staff and community groups is a requirement of the position.

Key duties include:

  • Developing and implementation of training programs, manuals, and lessons
  • Coordinating the delivery of fire service related training programs such as recruit training, officer development, emergency medical care and automated external defibrillation, vehicle driver/operator training etc.
  • Researching and evaluating fire department policies, procedures, techniques and equipment
  • Respond to emergencies as required
  • Assisting with recruitment and evaluation
  • Maintaining training records for all Fire and Township staff
  • A leadership role within the Health and Safety committee
  • A solid understanding of various teaching methods relating to adult education

Qualifications:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma
  • Minimum 10 years experience with municipal Fire Services (or equivalent)
  • Minimum 5 years experience at a management or supervisory level (or equivalent)
  • NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor I (or the ability to achieve within 1 year of hire)
  • NFPA 1001 Firefighter II
  • NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials
  • Current First Aid and CPR
  • Valid class DZ Ontario drivers license and clean drivers abstract
