Passing of Retired Owen Sound Fire Chief, Gordon Breen

At the Grey Bruce Health Services in Owen Sound, on Sunday, September 2nd, 2012. Gordon Melville Breen, of Owen Sound, in his 91st year. Predeceased by his beloved wife Patricia Marie (nee Lister). Cherished father of William Breen and his wife, Jane, of Ottawa; Brenda Marshall, of Southampton; Catherine Campbell and her husband, Jack, of Cambridge; Howard Breen and his wife, Martha, of Toronto. Devoted “Pa” to grandchildren, Katie, Heather, James, Nancy, Chris, Paul, Kate, Andrew, Rosalind and Christian and nine great-grandchildren. Loving uncle to many special nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Margaret Breen; his sister, Catherine Mary Breen; his three brothers, William, Harry and Stanley Breen. Dad was a distinguished paratrooper with the Canadian First Battalion in WW II and was a Prisoner of War. He served as a firefighter in Owen Sound for thirty-six years, rising to the rank of Fire Chief of the OSFD. During his tenure Dad founded the Grey County Mutual Aid Fire Service Association. An exemplary husband and father, Dad consistently modelled integrity, loyalty, honour and compassion. He had a remarkable sense of humour. Dad will be sorely missed.

Friends may call at the BRIAN E. WOOD FUNERAL HOME, 250 – 14th Street West, Owen Sound, Ontario N4K – 3X8 (519-376-7492) on Friday from 2:30 – 4:30 and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 554 – 15th Street East, Owen Sound on Saturday, September 8th, 2012 at 11:30 a.m. with Father James McSharry officiating. Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery. A Vigil Service will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. Members of Royal Canadian Legion Branch #6, Owen Sound, will hold a Memorial Service at the Funeral Home on Friday evening at 6:45 p.m. As an expression of sympathy, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Grey-Bruce or to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
