A 12-hectare forest fire in a remote area of Trent Lakes township in northern Peterborough County continued to rage on Wednesday.

Recent thunderstorms and hot weather have led to a rash of forest fires in the northeast, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

Municipalities throughout the area have issued fire bans. That includes North Bay, East Ferris, West Nipissing, Chisholm, Powassan, Nipissing, Callander, Mattawa, Burks Falls, Sundridge, Magnetawan, Kearney and Perry.

Two homes under construction in Scarborough have been gutted following a three-alarm fire on Tuesday night.

If Huron East firefighters aren’t busy extinguishing blazes, a handful of them are continuing the routine, but in a competitive manner and a few have a chance to make their hero status national. 

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been notified after a massive fire destroyed a Mississauga home under construction and left at least two homes beside it damaged.

The City of Kitchener has reached an agreement with the firefighters’ union on a new three-year contract. The deal will see wages increase at an average rate of 1.79 per cent per year over the course of the agreement.

About 25 people can't return to their home in Old Ottawa East after a two-alarm fire broke out in a small apartment building. Firefighters received a call at around 8 a.m. to the three-storey building at 135 Concord St. South.
