'This winter has been a little bit different, it's plus-10, plus-11': Dep. Fire Chief Ken Whetham says he can't remember February grass fire

Big grass fire in south Oshawa requires 100 minutes to put out by 3 trucks, no injuries

A large mid-winter grass fire off Stevenson Road in south Oshawa drew three fire trucks and required 12 firefighters to work for 100 minutes to put it out on Thursday afternoon.

Oshawa Deputy Fire Chief Ken Whetham said he couldn’t recall a February grass fire in all his time in fire services.

“But this winter has been a little bit different, it’s plus-10, plus-11,” he said.

The fire was actually located off 1240 Phillip Murray Ave., along the bike path, with Oshawa Fire Services called out at 2:53 p.m. Thursday and on site by 3 p.m. The fire crews had finished their work by 4:37 p.m., Whetham said.

“It was on the larger scale of what we usually attend", Whetham said.

He said there were no injuries.
