Two dogs rescued from Ava Road fire

Firefighters remain on the scene of an afternoon house fire on Ava Road where two dogs were rescued and two other dogs died.

Deputy Fire Chief Scott Pipe said firefighters were called to the scene, where no one was home, at about 2:15 p.m.

“The crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the front main-floor window,” Pipe said.

“By 3:04 it was called ‘under control’.”

Pipe said it was tragic that two of the family pets died in the fire but he was pleased that two dogs were rescued.

Brantford Fire used a pet mask – smaller oxygen masks kept on the trucks – to administer oxygen to at least one of the animals.

No one else was injured in the fire or fighting the fire.

The home is adjacent to the first hole at the Brantford Golf and Country Club.

Pipe said while no one was home at the time of the incident, it’s still important to remember to have working smoke alarms and ensure there’s a home escape plan.

The fire is now under investigation to determine its cause.
