The Municipality of Port Hope has issued an update on the investigation into a blaze at the former file factory building.

According to the statement, the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has completed its on-site investigation at the building, located at 121 Cavan St.

Control of the property was returned to the owners earlier this week, said officials.

The fire marshal’s formal report with their findings on the incident is anticipated to be released in about two months.

The Port Hope Police Service continues to investigate the fire and has conducted interviews related to the case, reads the statement.

In an effort to prevent unauthorized access to the site, a fence has been installed, added municipal officials.

The municipality’s chief building official is in communication with the property owners to ensure the debris from the fire is not left onsite for an extended period, reads the statement.

Meetings with the owners are reportedly planned to discuss how the fire will affect future plans for the property.

Additional updates to the community will be provided as relevant information becomes available, said the municipality.
