The issuing of burn permits has been suspended in Petrolia and Enniskillen for the rest of the week.

Fire Chief Rick Cousins informed the community in a notice Tuesday afternoon.

"With the arrival of the hot and humid weather expected until Sunday, June 23 -- with temperatures rising to about 32 C and humidex values expected to reach 40 C or higher -- I will be suspending the issuance of all Town of Petrolia and Township of Enniskillen burn permits at this time," Cousins said in a post shared to Facebook.

He added "a reconsideration for future permits will begin on Monday, June 24."

Officials have the ability to suspend burn permits when weather conditions are unusually hot or dry.

Having an unauthorized burn carries a significant cost.

For instance, in Petrolia, a property owner would be billed for the dispatch of two trucks and one hour of response time by firefighters, amounting to nearly $1,300.
