The Oakville Fire Department came to the aid of three people after they became trapped when a trench they were working in collapsed Tuesday, Sept. 10.

At around 8 p.m., the three individuals were at a home undergoing renovations on Mohawk Road, working in a 10-foot-deep basement access that was being created for a secondary suite, when one of the trench walls partially collapsed, said Oakville Fire Chief Paul Boissonneault.

“Two individuals were able to self-extricate using Oakville Fire Department equipment, however, a third remained trapped,” he said.

“The trapped individual had suffered a broken leg and was also safely extricated by fire and transported by Halton EMS.”

Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services reportedly assisted at the scene with their technical trench certified team.

Halton police and Halton Region EMS were also at the scene.

The Ministry of Labour is investigating this incident.
