The Norfolk County Fire Department has responded to its 1,000th call of 2024, making this year its busiest in five years. With a month still left in the year, the department reflects its dedication to community safety as call volumes rise.

As winter begins, the department is urging residents to prioritize fire safety. Key tips include testing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, using holiday decorations cautiously, and keeping walkways and fire hydrants clear of snow and ice. They also advise safe use of heating sources, attentive cooking practices, and maintaining fireplace and lithium-ion battery safety.

Ontario’s fire statistics highlight the importance of these steps. In 2023, the province recorded 121 fire-related deaths, with residential fires accounting for nearly 30 incidents daily across five provinces.

Fire Chief Gord Stilwell reminds residents: “Holiday festivities and colder weather bring extra fire risks. Stay safe and prepared. Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
