New firefighter recruits welcomed at graduation

City of Thunder Bay

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue welcomed eight new firefighters into its ranks at a graduation ceremony over the weekend.

During a ceremony held at the Thunder Bay Fire Rescue Training Centre on Friday, with their family members present, the graduates were personally congratulated by Fire Chief Dave Paxton, General Manager of Development, Infrastructure and Operations Kerri Marshall, City Manager John Collin, Mayor Ken Boshcoff and local MPs and MPPs.

The graduation ceremony marks the culmination of 15 weeks of intensive training and education in:

  • Firefighting Operations
  • Rope Rescue Operations
  • Aerial Ladder Operations
  • Hazardous Materials Operations
  • Medical “First Responder”
  • Wildland Firefighting
  • Water Rescue Operations
  • Auto Extrication Operations
  • Medical First Responder Training
  • Resilient Minds Training

“The role of today’s firefighter is so much more than fighting fires,” said Fire Chief Dave Paxton. “TBFR’s recruit training program is an intensive 15 weeks, but it’s only the beginning for our newest members – they are beginning a career that requires career-long learning.”

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue provides the city and region with a highly trained emergency service capable of handling a range of emergencies and hazardous situations. Fire suppression, auto extrication, hazardous material spills, industrial accidents, medical response/defibrillation, high/low angle rescue, and confined space rescue are provided from eight fire stations.
