One person was treated for smoke inhalation after a kitchen fire in a unit under renovation at a Centretown apartment building Friday morning.
The Ottawa Fire Services received a 9-1-1 call at 8:42 a.m., reporting a fire in the kitchen of a 10th floor apartment on Metcalfe Street.
“Firefighters arrived on scene two minutes after being dispatched to the call and confirmed smoke coming from the roof of the 11th floor high-rise,” Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Nick Defazio said in a statement.
“Firefighters quickly made their way to the 10th floor and made entry to the unit where flames were visible in the kitchen.”
The fire was extinguished before it could spread beyond the kitchen.
No one was found inside the apartment by firefighters. Defazio said one resident was treated for smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Defazio told CTV News Ottawa Friday afternoon the fire service was told the apartment was undergoing renovations at the time of the fire.
It’s the second kitchen fire in two days in Ottawa.
Firefighters responded to a call for a fire in the kitchen of a second-floor apartment at a building on Shillington Avenue just after 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Defazio said firefighters extinguished the fire before it could spread beyond the kitchen and living area.
Three residents were rescued from their third-floor balcony due to the smoke in their unit.
