Fire hits neighbouring London houses, causing $500K damage

A fire that started at one house and jumped to another in London’s Manor Park neighbourhood on Tuesday morning caused $500,000 damage, fire department officials say.

Firefighters were called at about 10:30 a.m. to a structure fire at 26 Paddington Ave., northwest of Wharncliffe and Base Line roads, where crews arrived on the scene to heavy smoke and fire, platoon chief Colin Shewell said.

“The fire was able to migrate to the property to the north . . . into the eaves and got up into the attic,” Shewell said of the house at 24 Paddington Ave. “Both houses sustained significant damage to the attics.”

Damage to both houses is estimated at $500,000, Shewell said, adding nobody was injured and a London Transit bus was brought to the scene to shelter area residents whose homes were evacuated.

“We had a coordinated attack with multiple units from across the city and we were able to bring it under control very quickly,” he said.

The cause remains under investigation – the office of the Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to assist in the probe – but the blaze appears to have started on the outside deck, Shewell said.
