Central York Fire Services crews had a busy Wednesday.
They fought two noteworthy fires July 16, according to incident reports.
The first was a middle-of-the night structure fire.
At about 3:30 a.m., firefighters responded to reports of a fire on Warner Crescent, northeast of Mulock Drive and Bathurst Street.
The first crew saw an elevated deck on fire behind a four-unit row house.
The fire, also in the walkout basement and attic, spread to an adjacent unit.
Multiple crews were involved in search and rescue and fire control, the incident report said.
The fire was fully extinguished.
Eight people from the two units are now unable to live in their homes and sought other accommodations.
Warner was closed during the fire but has since reopened.
Hours later, just before 9 a.m., firefighters responded to a house fire on Eagle Street.
The first crew found smoke coming from the first floor of the two-storey home.
Smoke was also found in an attached unit. Firefighters evacuated the tenants.
A firefighter was taken to Southlake Health, where he was treated and released.
Eagle Street in the area of the incident was closed during the fire but has since reopened.
An electrical wire is being blamed for the fire.
Electrical equipment is a leading cause of home fires in Ontario.
The fire department advises residents to avoid running cords under rugs to prevent damage and regularly check cords for damage, such as fraying.
If you notice a frayed or damaged cord, immediately turn off the appliances and replace the cord with a new one. A damaged cord can expose wires and result in a potential shock or fire hazard.
Ensure you plug heavy appliances directly into an outlet.
Do not overheat the outlet; large appliances should have their own outlet.
