A deadly winter fire in a residential section of Sault Ste. Marie’s downtown remains under the microscope.
One person died on the afternoon of Feb. 16 after flames destroyed a structure at 113 Woodward Ave., near the corner of Queen Street East.
Ontario Fire Marshal was called in to investigate.
The probe remains ongoing with no further updates at this time, Ontario Fire Marshal spokesperson Sean Driscoll told The Sault Star Thursday.
Police reported days later the single fatality inside the residence. No name was ever provided. A neighbour, who didn’t identify themselves to The Sault Star, said the home was occupied by a lone female.
Flames and heavy smoke engulfed the structure in the frigid afternoon of the fire. The heavily damaged structure remains boarded up these many months later, with no visible sign of repairs underway.
Driscoll said earlier there are no “prescribed” timelines for the completion of a fire investigation into determining the cause, origin, and circumstances.
