Emergency crews from Greater Sudbury are no longer at the scene of the Glencore smelter in Falconbridge following a furnace-related incident.

Fire and police had responded earlier Friday evening after molten material escaped from the furnace. Officials said the facility was evacuated as a precaution.

Deputy fire chief Jesse Oshell said the situation has been contained and is being handled internally.

Emergency personnel are no longer required and no injuries have been reported, Oshell said.

Emergency crews were called to the scene around 6:40 p.m. A Glencore spokesperson confirmed later Friday that there were no injuries.

“A furnace-related incident at our Sudbury smelter prompted the activation of alarms and the temporary evacuation of the facility,” Yonaniko Grenon said in an email.

“All personnel have been safely accounted for. The appropriate authorities were promptly notified, and both Greater Sudbury Police Services and the Sudbury Fire Department responded swiftly to provide support on site. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.”
