In a press release, Elliot Lake Fire Chief John Thomas said at approximately 10:21 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 24, fire department received a call for a working fire at a vacant building on Roman Avenue.
Upon arrival on scene, the fire department crew reported heavy smoke and flames showing from the old Roman Avenue Public School building. Crews worked all night to get the fire under control but heavy damage was done to the building. The roof of the building was gone.
Estimated damage is unknown at this time. Fire crew is on scene and will be conducting an investigation.
