East end fire deemed arson

Belleville police have charged a man with arson in connection with a fire early Friday in the east end of the city.

Neighbours first spotted the blaze at 204 Lingham Street, just east of where Cannifton meets Station Street.

Police responded around 2 a.m. to assist Belleville firefighters with traffic control.

Shortly after arriving, officers placed a 33-year-old male under arrest for arson.

The unidentified accused was held for a bail hearing.

Victim Services and Red Cross also responded to support five people who were displaced as a result of the fire.

There were no serious injuries.

An investigation into the incident is continuing involving members of the Criminal Investigations Division, the Belleville Fire Prevention Division of the Belleville Fire Department and the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal.
