Two people have been hospitalized, one of them critically, following an early morning multiple-alarm fire in Hamilton.
Authorities say they were called out to 537 King St. East around 1:30 a.m. on Monday.
Upon their arrival, crews reported that the first and second floors of a 3-storey brick house were showing smoke and fire.
Outside the building, firefighters found one of the occupants lying on the ground with injuries. They then indicated that there was another person still inside.
“Firefighters who had entered the house on the first floor to initiate search and rescue operations advised that they could hear a person yelling on the second floor,” Hamilton Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe said in an update.
“Additional firefighters quickly made their way to the second floor, they located the person and immediately removed them from the building.”
Both victims were taken to hospital. Authorities say that the person who was pulled from the building was transported by paramedics in “critical condition.”
Following the rescue, crews were able to bring the fire under control.
As of Monday morning, the fire remains under investigation and crews were still on scene performing a fire watch.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and Cunliffe estimates there to have been $25,000 in damages to the structure.
“Due to the condition of the person rescued the Ontario Fire Marshals Office has been notified and is responding to assist with the investigation.”
