Caledon Fire & Emergency Services (CFES) is celebrating its 100th anniversary with a time-honoured symbol of recognition and pride: a commemorative challenge coin.

Challenge coins have a long-standing tradition in emergency services and military communities, symbolizing excellence, camaraderie, and service. CFES has previously given challenge coins to mark milestones and achievements but the 100th anniversary coin stands as a once-in-a-lifetime tribute to the department’s past, present, and future.

This centennial coin captures the essence of 100 years of fire protection in Caledon, honouring generations of firefighters who have served with courage and compassion. The coin showcases a historic pumper truck and a modern squad vehicle, symbolizing the evolution of firefighting equipment and techniques over the last century. It also incorporates iconic elements of the CFES logo, such as the badge shape and the maple leaf – a nod to both the department’s identity and its proud place in the Canadian fire service tradition.

“Challenge coins carry stories of courage, commitment, and community,” says Fire Chief Dave Pelayo. “As we mark 100 years of service, this challenge coin is a tribute to every firefighter who has helped shape our department’s legacy. It symbolizes where we’ve been, who we are, and the values that will guide us into the future.”

The design was created by Matthew Morton, a volunteer firefighter from Station 303, who brought his lifelong passion for art to life. “When the opportunity came to contribute to this milestone, I knew I wanted to be part of it,” says Morton. “Designing the coin is my way of giving thanks to the Chiefs, Captains, and fellow firefighters who have mentored me. I hope this coin reflects the growth, dedication, and unity of our department.”

“Caledon Fire and Emergency Services has been a cornerstone of safety, resilience, and community spirit for 100 years,” says Judith D’Souza Soares, Commissioner of Community Services. “This challenge coin is a powerful symbol of that legacy.”
