No injuries were reported after an explosion in a shed led to a fire in Blackstock early Wednesday morning that engulfed two homes, says Scugog Township.
Firefighters from both Port Perry and Caesarea fire halls responded to a blaze in the area of Old Scugog Road and Church Street just after 2 a.m. on June 5, said Lori Bowers, a spokesperson for the township.
According to Bowers, there was a report of an explosion in a shed at 13900 Old Scugog Rd. The resulting fire jumped to a nearby car before leaping to that residence and a neighbouring home at 13880 Old Scugog Rd.
Another neighbour noticed a glow from the fire and alerted the occupants of the homes, she added.
Both homes “endured pretty extensive damage” and the occupants are now with family and friends, said Bowers.
As of about 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Bowers said the fires were “under control” and that crews will remain on the scene for a few hours to carry out a fire watch.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been contacted, she added.
Assisting Scugog firefighters at the scene were crews from Uxbridge and Clarington, which provided “great assistance” with their aerial truck, said Bowers.
A stretch of Old Scugog Road near the fire scene remains closed on Wednesday morning, she said.
Durham police say officers were called to assist firefighters and remained at the scene for traffic control.
