Nolalu's goal of purchasing a second-hand water tanker truck for the village's fire department has received a sizable and unexpected boost. An anonymous donor has left the community feeling pumped with a gift of $10,000 toward the tanker project. "It's just an incredible donation," Nolalu fire Chief Sarah Shoemaker said on Wednesday. The amount, although hefty, still leaves the department $100,000 short of its target for a replacement tanker, which may be found on the used market. Rural fire departments rely on water tankers because fire-hydrant infrastructure is often lacking at emergency scenes. The province provides small fire departments in unincorporated areas with fire trucks, but auxiliary equipment purchases, like tankers, are financed from fundraising. Nolalu's former water tanker truck was more than 40 years old after it was taken off the road about a year ago when it could no longer pass a safety inspection. New water tanker trucks, with price tags of more than $700,000, are simply out of Nolalu's reach, Shoemaker said.
